They are very similar in performance. Whichever one you find for a good price is the one you should get. Although I think the 280x is a little hard to find at the moment.

Yes, the above is true. If you need compute the 280x is worth waiting for though as GCN slaughters GK 106.

I'd opt for the 280x if you can find one. But the 770 will still get the job done. Either card will work for you.

if its purely for gaming and you dont need any cuda or physix compute... the 280x is faster and cheaper.

if down the road you want to go dual gpu... then get a 4gb 770. if you dont plan on going dual gpu's... get the 280x

4 years maybe? It is hard to tell with the new processes and mantle being a factor and what new processes might bring, or if 1440p becomes standard etc.

With those settings in 1080p, you will not have to worry for 2 years. There are tons of cards on the market that are two years old that will get medium settings with today's games. I really don't think you have to worry. Mantle will also assist if you go the 280x route.

i am in the same situation as you, with roughly a 350-400 dollar budget

and i have read that the 4gb version of the 770 is not worth it at all even for the future as it can't utilize the vram...it's only use is for sli or dual monitor setups...i'm new to all this so i might not be 100% accurate though

the 2gb version of that 770 also has been seen to hit the same benchmarks as the 4gb version!

i am going to go the r9 280x toxic route (have one on backorder..MEH)...gl with whatever you decide.

Yes, but that GPU is a little pricey. You would be just as good with a 770 2GB model. Unless you don't really care about pricing, in that case you should just get a 780.

No, the 770 2GB of VRAM is quite sufficient to run BF4. But if you want to spend the extra money, get the 4GB version. Although I can pretty much guarantee you the in-game difference probably won't even be noticeable.

that one or the msi lightning are the top performing 770s

although you can get the superclocked evga for like 340 on newegg (performs better)

the lightning would be my choice, but the evga superclocked has benchmarked better in some situations and vice versa for the msi

They can recommend all they want, that is how they sell there new cards. I promise you can run BF4 on ultra with 4XAA in 1080p on 1 monitor and still get AT LEAST 50+.
