Moved aroung files in Nearly full HD, many files disappear

I resorted files (ie moved aroung files to differnt directories but did not add) in a 90% full external 2 TB Seagate. One directory out of the total of 8 (lets call it X) had only one sub directory x1 sorted.
All files in X and its subdirectories disappeared. X and x1 directory names remained without any files.

After some clicking on the various directories, all files in X reappeared and remained stable when I clicked all over the place.
After a few days I bought a new ext HD to accept the transfer of X directory but this time I could not get the missing files back.
I tried unhiding files, chkdsk (using Windows PROPERTIES - TOOLS) keep hanging at the end, changing to another computer (from Win7Ultimate) to Vista Home 32, changed cables, USB ports and moving away 300 GB.

I dare not try defrag.I thought the moving around files in sorting, the files took more space than before close to 100% full and pu8shed the files of the unsorted X "out".
When I added up the visble files they come up to close to 90% of the 2TB, the approx 100 TB of X disappeared but it must be somewhere because not only has it reappeared before, file recovery software (Recuva and others) cannot find anything missing

I would be grateful for any help

It sounds like your hard drive has bad sectors and possibly bad tracks that are resulting in the loss of your data. You should run Crystal Disk Info to see if you're getting any serious S.M.A.R.T. errors. Link to the software download here: http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-e.html

If you are getting any critical errors I would suggest backing up your data immediately and to not use your faulty external hard drive or else risk further loss of data. And lastly if you are getting critical errors your disappearing files are most likely already corrupted beyond use.

==============================
Thank you for your prompt response.Sorry for not replying promptly as I tried Chkdsk in Command Prompt of Windows and it went on for over 12 hours (I then left it overnight and went to sleep). Results at bottom

Crystal Disk and Hard Disk Sentinel (I forgot to mention this) tested the HD as 100% OK.
SEATools for Windows (which I did not try before as I thought the HD was OK) short test failed informing of bad sectors. I then re tried Chkdsk - result is:
C:\>chkdsk /r f:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Volume label is New Volume.

CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 5)...
505792 file records processed.
File verification completed.

0 reparse records processed.
CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 5)...

0 unindexed files scanned.
0 unindexed files recovered.
CHKDSK is verifying security descriptors (stage 3 of 5)...

CHKDSK is verifying Usn Journal...

CHKDSK is verifying file data (stage 4 of 5)...
505776 files processed.
File data verification completed.
CHKDSK is verifying free space (stage 5 of 5)...
117453869 free clusters processed.
Free space verification is complete.
An unspecified error occurred (6e74667363686b2e 10da).

After transferring out about 300 GB, free space is 500 GB instead of 200 GB, I still cannot see the missing files and Recuva cant find any. I never suspected HD errors because I test with HD Sentinel from time to time and although it is about 2 years old. I used it only about once a fortnight to transfer files from the HD in the computer unfortunately not as a backup. Is there anyway I can recover the lost files.

I want to post the lessons I have learnt
1. Dont forget the external hard disk is not a backup, it requires a backup
2. Dont assume that the hard disk is newish and hardly used it cannot go faulty
3. Even when hard disk status programs show the hard disk is 100% Ok - dont take it for granted. Frequently test by Chkdsk or other programs for bad sectors and other errors etc
