Hey guys! I just build my new pc and I am very excited, but also have a big question regarding storage. I know very little about PC's (just general stuff) so please bare with me if the question is stupid.

I got for the first time an SSD (120gb Kingston) which I am using to boot windows 7. I also have a game (Guild Wars 2 - around 19gb) on the disk, and thats about it. Everything I have downloaded so far has been downloaded to my 1TB HDD.

Now, even if I make sure everything goes to the HDD (D) (I changed chrome to download every thing there, and also make sure to select it when downloading something manualy) it seems I loose storage on the SSD. I got told that even if I select D, since I have my OS on C some files would be there. Is that true? And are those files as big as the normal ones? I have now about 62.9GB left on the 120SSD, and if I select everything that shows instaled and click properties only show 34 gb used (111-34=77, not 62.9!) Sometimes the SSD would loose some hundred mb all of a sudden without doing anything! And it does not go back to normal! Also, I think is worth to mention that I had already all the programs downloaded, but since I noticed this I delete the files + unistall them from the control panel and that didnt recover any GB/MB, so you could say I am loosing double storage at the moment.. even If I reset the PC it doesnt go back to normal.
I am really frustrated about this, since all of a sudden without doing anything I keep loosing storage :(

Either way, I don't know how this works and I am sure I may be missing something, but at this rate I will have 0 space left in the SSD at no time.. If anyone cares to explain me how this work I would really appreciate it!

PS: The programs I have downloaded so far are Skype,Chrome, Itunes, Steam, I downloaded Skyrim but since I noticed some files over in the C disk I unstall it as well)

Solution

Downloading the file is one thing. Installing it is something else. It is installed on the SSD. As it should be. No worries. You can do into the place where you downloaded it, and delete that...

1. Do not panic. 100MB up or down is completely normal. Temp files, and they will raise and lower as necessary.

2. My Kingston 128GB, after 15 months of use, is hovering around 50GB used. That is with the OS and ALL applications apart from games on it.

3. See this completely self serving tutorial for saving stuff elsewhere: http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-1834397/ssd-redirecting-static-files.html

Thank you very much for the quick answer! But the weird thing is that sometimes is not 100mb, could be up to 600mb as it happened before, really weird! And also, even if I follow what it is on the guide and the downloads go directly to the HDD, seems to take up a lot of space. I havent changed the Libraries, and will do that. Hopefully will help.

Also, by changing the Steam file location, that should store the 'saves' of the games there? Because before I had skyrim and steam installed in the HDD, but for some reason the save files were under Documents>My games? That should be fixed if I change the libraries?

Ok, I won't panick but this is really weird for me. I changed the libraries etc, and went ahead and downloaded this free antivuris 'Avast' When I was isntalling it, I specifically selected to be downloaded in a carpet under my HDD. It installed succesfully, and know I've lost 200mb on my SSD. I look inside the files of the SSD and can't find anything related to Avast in there, nor an increase in the storage if I check from properties.

This is just really weird for me, I know I may sound a little bit paranoid but it still bugs me alot :/

Well, I also installed it directly on the HDD (Like when you go to advance install and can actually select where to install it), and made sure about that since I can see the install on there.. but again, for some reason all the installs even if I specifically select the HDD and a folder in there (and also make sure that no install files are on the ssd), it seems to still use both my HDD AND SDD storage... Am I missing to change something else?

I will do that. Since you could say this is my first day with the PC, just kinda worried about that. I hate to ask so many questions, but you have been very helpful so far so let me ask you a final one. ..

If I keep having this issue, making sure everything is going to where it's supossed to, what do you think the issue may be? A problem with the SSD?
