Reusing HDD Help

I read that I can't just take out my HDD from my current PC and put it into my new build; that the drivers and stuff will be wrong. I have a question now. My PC is stock so it came with Microsoft Windows 7 already installed on it. I have reset my HDD memory to factory settings before. Will this do the trick or is their something different I have to do to get it to work. Also can I reuse the Windows 7 I already have installed? Thanks for any help.

If it came with Win7 already installed, it is almost certainly an OEM version. And as such, will not work or activate with the new hardware.

Different PC, new OS.

What does that mean exactly. is there no possible way of reusing it in my new build. I am not very computer savvy.

For Windows 7, an "OEM" license specifically means that that license key is tied to that original motherboard. Different motherboard = different PC.

For almost all prebuilt PC that came with Win7 installed, it is an OEM license.

So I can't use my Win7 in the new PC. Can I still use the HDD and just install a new version of Win7?

Depending on size and age, yes, you can reuse the old HDD.

Alright thanks. Guess I have to spend another $100 bucks on Win7. And I was hoping I could avoid that step. I more question before I leave you to your life. My friend said it is possible for me to call Microsoft support and tell them that I have Win7 installed on my old hard drive and want to use it for a new build and they will give me a key. Is this true or will I have to spend that $100.

That is very much a 'maybe'. They are under no obligation to allow reuse of that key on a different PC.
They might, they might not.
