New to Tom's Hardware, but built my own system 10 years ago. I'm no longer familiar with AMD stuff since I've been all Intel for the past 7 years.

With Cyber Monday sales and all, I decided I wanted to build an HTPC on a budget. I also hope to do a little bit of gaming (nothing intense, just Starcraft 2, Need For Speed, maybe an FPS here and there). This is what I purchased:

$100 - AMD A10-5800k APU
$55 - AsRock FM2A75M Pro4+ FM2/FM2+ Motherboard
$53 - 8GB (2 x 4GB) G.Skill 2133 MHz Ripjaws X cas 11
$7.50 - Sentey case (love this thing)
$25 - Thermaltake 600W TR-2 PSU
$15 - XFX Radeon HD 6750

I'm still debating what to get for storage - 1 TB HDD for $55 or 120 GB SSD for $100

So here's the deal: I just purchased the Radeon HD 6750 and want to use that for my main graphics, but I already opened the A10, and NewEgg agreed to refund the processor and motherboard for a gift card.

My main question: Since I have the 6750 discrete graphics, the A10 graphics would go to waste, along with the processing power that could be had in an FX-6300 and motherboard. From what I know, the FX-6300 is noticeably better at processing than the A10 and for $25 more (CPU + motherboard), it is tempting. But what about longevity in the FM2+ motherboard compared with AM3+? I expect to keep this system for about 3-5 years without really upgrading anything. Sure the FX-6300 is better, but will I really notice it? Please give me your opinions!

Also, I bought that 2133 MHz RAM specifically for the A10 APU. Would I be better off with $57 8GB (2 x 4GB) G.Skill 1600 MHz at cas 8 if I get the FX-6300? How much does memory speed matter with the FX CPUs?

No one knows the future of socket AM3+ except AMD. But AMD has been very quiet lately. Sometime mid-2012 AMD stated they will support socket AM3+ into 2015. Steamroller is AMD's next generation CPU core and many people thought it will be released for socket AM3+. Well... apparently not at least not in 2014 (if ever). AMD's 2014 roadmap shows that the Piledriver generation FX CPUs will continue to be manufactured throughout 2014. Nothing else appears for socket AM3+ in 2014.

On the other hand, Steamroller will be making an appearance in AMD's next generation APU called "Kaveri" for socket FM2+. If I am not mistaken, I believe it will be available for sale on January 14, 2014. Actual performance of Kaveri is unknown. It will be better than Richland, but probably not better than Piledriver.

As for socket FM2+ itself, it is unknown how long it will last before it is replaced. Socket FM1 survived 1 generation. Socket FM2 survived 2 generations. Will socket FM2+ survive 3 generations?

Regarding RAM speed for FX CPUs. I am not sure if DDR3-2133 would provide any noticeable difference over DDR3-1600.
