the 7970ghz went from around 300 to out of stock, and when it came back in 500+
the 280x was 300 now i cant find it for 400$

how long till the prices stop sucking?

Solution
This isn't a yearly thing really. Yea black friday and stuff might cause a few of the cards to sell out, but not every single graphics card manufacturer puts on a sale. It was the sky rocket of litecoin, which is better suited to be handled by amd GPUs than just about anything. the gtx 770 is a good card too, slightly better than the 280x overall performance wise, much better when you consider things like power efficiency and cooling.
I'd guess around the end of december they should be back to normal. All the sales and bitcoiners bought them out, then when the new batch of chips comes out mid-late december including non reference designs that will fill all the back orders and then there should be extra supply a little after that

before november 28th, everything in stock at reasonable prices.
after november 28th everything out of stock for the top 2 tiers of amd and the top tier of their 7970
than when they came back in stock, they came 50-200$ more expensive than previously.

its not good games its the damn black friday holiday.

sounds reasonable to me, i can wait, but do we have any president for that set? i only buy a gpu once every 3-4 years, and usually during the summer months because of how hot it gets. do we have previous years to look at for thats how it happens?

considering every year we get a few people just trampled and yet people still go out for it... i would say people care about it immensely... i dont understand the fascination with doing christmas crap almost a month in advance but other people...

i have an older cpu, the way i see it, mantle is possibly going to extend the life of my computer by a bit. i also use my computer for more than just gaming, so i also see more value in amd than i do nvidia at this point.

on a side note. amd r9 280X is now up to 420$

The hike in prices is not mainly because of the holiday season or black friday.

LiteCoins, a crypto currency, gained in value and caused a mad rush to mine said coins. And AMD cards like the HD 7950, 7970, R9 280X, R9 290 are very efficient at doing it. So they got literally bought up by the miners, and sellers took the opportunity to raise their prices.

Not every game will use mantle, so it will vary if mantle will even matter to you. And what else do you plan to use your computer for and why do you think AMD is the better solution to handle things other than gaming?

It really depends..
Why haven't you considered the GTX 770? It performs better at 1080p and those CUDA cores are especially useful for particular editing software and things like that.

The reason for the price-rise in the 280X is the hype in bit coin mining, hearing people buying 50 of these at a time a first wonder.. if your making that much money then why the need to make more o_0 that's roughly 15grand. The ASIC chips is what make them so bitcoin hungry, still imo bitcoin mining is pretty foolish and you could invest that money in more porfitable things.

Anyway you have to take into account of the amount of dedication puts into their GPU drivers, it's not as well worked as Nvidia, not to mention Nvidia's new software which optimizes game makes people lean towards Nvidia cards nowadays. Hell even 2 GTX 770s in sli is roughly as powerful as a Titan.

The only good thing imo about the 280X against the 770 is the 3GB of VRAM, that's useful for people who either use 150+ mods in there games that feature high resolution textures or just gaming at resolution at 2k and such. And since it costs $420 and you're willing to pay that than buying the 4GB version of the GTX 770 would be alot smarter.

Might I ask.. why not just get the GTX 770? there's three free games with it. Something AMD hardly does which is gives free games, actually im wrong they do. However it's from a table created maybe 2 years ago which include games from that era, unlike Nvidia that gives you the latest games

Some of the latest games released (notably BF4) are AMD optimized
Is it the same kind of dedication NVidia puts into the their drivers that makes them FRY GPUs?

You seem to be forgetting about the wider memory bus which can make a significant difference in some applications.

AMD used to include free games with all their cards. NVidia didn't start doing it until well after AMD
But its true they don't usually include them anymore

what o_0 make their GPUs fry.. what?? proof?

yes I didn't incluide the memory bus but how would this be useful in games? no wait explain hows the gtx 770 faster in 1080p gaming dsespite being 256 bit, less shaders and 2GB of VRAM

oh sure let's be afraid that our GPUs will be killed from from drivers 3 years ago and 6 months ago respectively no to mention they very very low amount of GPUs this happened to ooh yea.. let's be afraid

i looked at nvidias 3 free games,
assassin's creed - i burnt out on those games, and sailing in a game that's to easy isn't going to bring me back
splinter cell - outside of the original trilogy i have no interest, and this one doesn't seem to be an improvement.
batman arkham origins - i haven't beaten the first 2 yet and will most likely burn out on the second one long before i would ever get to the third.

amd, if you can get a 7970, offers up thief, a game i am looking forward to but have yet to preorder, saints row 4, a game i am waiting on a major sale to pick up, and blood dragon, the last of the 5-7 games to chose from i dont already have/ have an interest in.

than there is also mantle, i don't have the best cpu, and if that does what i think it does it should give my system some new life for any game that supports it.

i would also put amd cards above cuda, just because most applications i use have an opencl integration already and amd is better.

than there are personal grievances that i have with nvidia that are fairly petty, from them gimping games for competitors, making proprietary software and then making it run like hell so the gpu looks better...

but when it comes down to it, amd is in the new consoles, i have to imagine that if things get ported to the pc, they will run better on amd than nvidia.

i'm able to wait for amd to get cheaper, but i'm not paying no 420+$ for one.
