I have multiple PC's all using Ethernet. Is there some device I can use to let one of those PC's broadcast a wifi signal so that someone using a laptop in the house can access the internet wirelessly. I prefer using wired rather than wireless in the house. But I have a high school student who uses a school-provided wireless laptop who occasionally uses it at home.

I see wireless network adapters, access points, etc., available in stores, but I'm really not sure which if any will do what I'm asking.

A wireless router would suit your needs. You can wire whichever PCs you need wired, yet have that wireless signal for your high schooler as well as any other Wi-Fi enabled devices able to connect (iPhone, iPad, Kindle, etc.).

Most of them are a breeze to set up; as long as you stay with larger-name brands you shouldn't see any issues.
Browsing an online store (eg. Newegg, Bestbuy, Frys, pick your poison) and reading reviews might assist in your purchase decision.

If you have no Internet get a wireless router, much easier for automatic address assignment and not having to use. If you already have Internet, does your router have wireless that may be turned off. If you have a router without wireless, but a cheap router and configure it as an access point.
