what files does it contain
e.g. himem, config.sys. autoexec.bat, command.com, and some aspidos files. That lot's from memory, is there a definitive list.

Are you talking about bootable recovery media? Like something you would put onto a USB key or CD? And what operating system are you using?

Hello... http://www.allbootdisks.com/disk_contents/dos.html Some of the files are Hidden, but theses will give you basic Bootup, file reading/writing, and Disk Tools ...Back in the day... you could load on a floopy disk... about one meg of data.
