Hi everyone,

Part List:
http://pcpartpicker.com/user/bvold/saved/37fS

I'm going to be building a PC with the part list above. Just wanted to check everyone's thoughts on whether this build is doable. I'm basing it on a build I saw on youtube (also see below) . I'm coming from a 27 inch iMac(3.4 GHz Intel Core i7) and am looking for something faster as well as something I can upgrade over time. I work as a 3D Generalist mostly doing 3D illustrations so I'm looking for some more render power. I built a PC with my dad when I was kid and grew up using PCs (my dad is an IBM-er) so I'm not totally unfamiliar with the process/ PC platform.

So my main questions are this:
1) Will this build work/compatibility issues?
2) will the 4930k work with this motherboard? is updating the BIOS super difficult? (youtube build uses a 3930k) Should I just get the 3930k?
3) Am i missing anything that i should get to make this easier?
4) Any cost saving moves here? (i.e cheaper power supply, etc...)
5) AND this is a big one. I currently don't own a PC. Will that be a problem? As in do I need a PC to update the BIOS before I build this, etc...

Thanks in advance. I'm really excited about learning how to do this!

Everything looks great if you have the money. I'm sure most people have updated their BIOs before and would agree that it is not difficult.

Here's where you can update the BIOS
https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P9X79_PRO/#support

For my motherboard, I had to download and transfer the file into a USB Thumb Drive and then restart my computer with it. Then I entered the BIOS screen and there were some options to update it.

Your build is great but put a 780 for $10 less :)

That build looks pretty good!

I wish i had something like that QQ

One thing though, you def don't need a 1KW PSU for that, I've edited your list to include a more optimised PSU for the power draw :

Saved you around $100 too! :D

As for CPU compatibility, a quick BIOS flash should do the trick, the guy above linked the update, just throw it onto a USB stick and you're good to go for flashing. (Since you don't have another PC, you could use any public PC or even a friend's PC for 3 second while you download the update) Here's a video of the mobo BIOS update :

Well, 650W is a bit tight with such powerful CPU and GPU especially if he wants to overclock them.
I recommend either a 760W or a 860W like these ones:

They have great quality and Platinum efficiency score.

Great. I thought about getting the 1000w for future expandibility (another Graphics card ,etc..) but I'm happy to save some money and get a lower wattage one if y'all think that will work.

I was planning on buy the P9X79 PRO motherboard but I'm noticing most places are out of stock on this. Should I be getting a different one. Is this model outdated?

Thanks for the info. I'm tempted to just get the i3930k so I don't have to update the BIOS and can take one less variable out of the equation. Can I just throw the BIOS on a FAT32 formatted USB from my MAC. Everyone one I know has a MAC. I guess I could try the public library to find a PC or maybe just go to Best Buy and use one of their display models.

What about the Gigabyte GA-X79-UP4? Really good motheboard, as good as your first option and much cheaper: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-motherboard-gax79up4
