I have cell service that provides a hotspot for internet access. I would like to connect a security to my hotspot. I can connect the camera but cannot see it from anywhere outside my house. I have finally figured out it is because the hotspot does not provide a method for remote access. I have previously had this camera on my home network so I know this functionality is possible. Is there any way - client bridge or repeater or ??? - that would allow me to connect a dd-wrt router to the hotspot and then the camera to the router that would then allow the remote access I need?

internet ->cell phone ->wireless wan ->dd-wrt router ->camera ->internet

I suspect your problem is because most wireless networks are natted 2 times. The hotspot you likely could solve the issue of port forwarding somehow but the ISP router doing the NAT there is no way to get the forwarding to work. Most ISP there is little you can do about this. If you have verizon they do offer for more money the ability to get a real IP address. Then if the hotspot could port forward you could port map your camera. I never tried to port forward a hotspot I always used a USB dongle attached to a router and that is how I found out about the verizon extra charge for a fixed IP.

You are likely going to have to use a third party "vpn" system to get access. You would take a machine on your network and make a outbound connection to the server site, you could then connect to the server site from the external location. Something like gotomypc or teamviewer are going to be the simple ones if you can use one of your PC as slave but I am sure you can build a full vpn to a router or pc in your house and route traffic.

Thanks for your knowledge in this area. I unfortunately believe you are likely right on with the hotspot problem. I am not familiar with VPN so I may have to do more reading on that option. I am trying to get a security camera in a remote location that has electricity but no internet. Adding the hotspot to my existing cell plan was an inexpensive option which is why I was trying to solve the issue. Again thanks for the information.
