external hard drive power supply

does it matter if you keep an external hard drive with its own power supply plugged in when not in use (as in not connected to a computer at all)? cause i figure if it did there would be trouble with power outages and moving the hard drive. but I'm asking to be safe.

Yes you can keep it plugged in all the time. Though you may lose data from a power outage, the hard drive will act the same as if you just turned your computer off by holding the power button. However, if the hard drive is not on a surge protector, then you may fry the hard drive all together from a lightning strike or a power outage. (unlikely but definately can happen.
I had iffy power in my old apartment, fried my HDD that way...
