I copied my documents from a computer running windows xp onto CD ( the program was Works), then copied them into downloads on the new computer running windows 8 . The documents are in there, and are listed correctly, but when I try to click on each one, they appear all garbled and unreadable. They also appear that way when printed out. How do I make this new computer recognize these documents so that I can view and print ?

Welcome to Tom's. You're about to receive a Private Message about a deleted post - nothing to worry about, it was just a duplicate of this thread.

I doubt Works will work in Windows 8 even if you installed it - they've effectively blocked MSOffice 2003 from working so it seems you may have to recover the files from the XP installation or keep using that for your word-processing. The alternative is a more recent version of MSOffice or one of the many free Open/Libre Office programmes.

I have my documents copied on CD from the windows xp computer. Is there some way to use the CD? You mention Open/Libre Office. Is his something I can download?
Thanks
