My wife's laptop took a NASTY fall down a flight of stairs when she was moving out of her apartment a few years back. We scrapped the whole Laptop but hung on to the HDD hoping to recover the data. Of course the dude at best buy started throwing out words like "$1,000" and "Or more". We want to try and get it repaired but its kind of a lower priority, I mean it's not going anywhere and not getting more damaged. Is there any tips, tricks, or gypsy magic that I can try to do at home? I hook it to an external case and it just clicks and clicks. I don't care about any other files than pictures.
ANY and ALL help would be GREATLY appreciated. This drive has pictures on it that are very dear to my wife, Some include alot of the only photos she has of her Grandfather before he passed... I don't need a lesson in backing up data my wife and I already know. This was her only computer for a long while and stored a ton of precious pictures for her.
Thank you in advance.

It is a small money risk but you can try replacing the pcb of the drive. I have fixed several using this method. Numbers have to match as close as possible to be successful.

http://www.hddzone.com/ is one of many sites that specialize in this. Good luck!
