Hello,

I am going to be switching out my power supply soon and had some quick questions. I am sending my power supply back to New Egg because it makes a buzzing sound when I play certain games. ( Not certain it is my power supply but it sounds like the source). Anyways, should I get a different brand of power supply to alleviate the coil whine buzzing sound? Is this a compatibility issue or just a faulty unit? Also, do I need to install any new "drivers" or anything like that to install a new power supply? Is there any way to tell for sure where the buzzing is from? It is loudest when i put my ear by the power supply. Below is a link to a video of the sound it is making. I tab into a loading screen that makes the computer buzz at about 5 seconds into video.

CPU: AMD 8350
GPU: Gigabyte Radeon R9 280x (the 3 fan one)
PSU: Corsair HTX 850w
MoBo: Gigabyte 990

it doesn't sound like coil whine, it sounds like a fan touching something as it's too constant. Does it change when you change your GPU fan speed? Does it occur when running a graphics benchmark?

Although coil whine is annoying, it's not necessarily something failing. It's the windings on inductors vibrating against each other, which is indicative of either a poorly chosen switching frequency or poorly chosen inductors. It's more an indication that the manufacturer didn't pay enough attention to quality during the design.

It will react simultaneously with what I do. Like I can tab into a game, and the sound starts immediately. I can tab out of the game, and the sound will cease immediately. There is no delay whatsoever.

Okay so I took the PSU out of the case and ran it. It is definitely the source of the noise. I can actually hear it at all times, it just gets louder when in programs. I will be sending it back.
