Hi,

Specs:
Asus Rampage IV Extreme Motherboard
Inter Hex Core i7 3930k (overclocked to 4.7 ghz)
32GB Corsair 1866mhz RAM
Asus HD 7850 GPU (running 3x 1920x1080 monitors, w/ active adapter)
180GB Intel SSD (Windows 7)
2TB RAID 0 (Programs and Games)
4TB Storage (External)
H100 Corsair Water Cooler
850W Power Source

My question is should I spend $190 and get another HD 7850 card or sell it and get one Asus AMD R9 290 card. I like my setup now besides some overclocking problem (AKA please PM me if you can help me with my set up) but I get screen tearing on one monitor sometimes all three. I thought with a second card I could play some on my TV too (Also 1920x1080). But while the value is still in my card should sell it and get the new one and ditch the TV for now. Benchmarks are not the best with the 7850 by itself. I spent way to much last year for this set up and should have spent more on the GPU than some of the other parts. I am still new to this game so any input would be great. Thanks for the help!!

(If you can help with my overclock I would be willing to pay if you can explain and make it worth it.)

One R9 290 would be better. No dealing with microstutter and inconsistencies of crossfire.

Crossfire isn't supported with every game. R9 290 will be worth it in the end.

single fast card over dual mid range cards all day, every day. r9 290. especially for triple monitor, crossfire + eyefinity = worse perceivable performance than a single card.

What is the point of having four gpu slots in the motherboard then? And I like running eyefinity.

i run two 7970's in CF but yeah go with the 290 because you can get another one of those down the road where as you would need to ditch the old cards and get new ones.

Multiple GPU's (Crossfire or SLI) are really best for when the BEST single card isn't enough, such as a GTX780Ti. As said, benchmarks for 2x SLI/Crossfire may seem to suggest more value but in reality the experience isn't as smooth (though it's getting better).

YOUR PROBLEM however, is gaming on three monitors requires more processing power than you are considering adding. Thus, you are going to make some sacrifices in quality, frame rate or strike a balance between both.

Personally, I'd rather game with a single card (prefer NVidia) with a single monitor.

VIDEO RAM:
I don't think it says here how much VRAM you have, but even 2GB might not be enough. I know many HD7850's have only 1GB. If you Crossfire it's still just 1GB usable as the data is the same on both.

Anti-aliasing uses more Video RAM as well. With the number of pixels at 3x1920x1080 that's a lot of Video RAM you'd need for the average game to scale to 4xMSAA.

SKYRIM example:
Skyrim uses 1.5GB of Video RAM with the HD texture pack, at 1920x1080 using the maximum quality settings. If you used three monitors, I suspect that would easily go above 2GB of VRAM required. Dropping the resolution, avoiding the HD texture pack, and reducing AA to 2xAA would help reduce the VRAM footprint but it won't go below 1GB.

Hopefully that helps a little bit.

single r9 290 is better than 2 cf 7850. cf currently has issues such as micro stuttering.
