I've decided to turn my Phenom II 840 system into an HTPC and squeeze it into a Sugo SG02-BF case. My problem is this is an older board and I added a USB 3.0 PCI card to the available slot above the graphics card which also has a USB 3.0 header for the front of the case which is nice. I can't seem to get the HDMI audio to output in 5.1 (Radeon HD 6770) and the onboard sound has no digital audio outputs. I think the solution might be to try a PCI or USB sound card, my problem the only available slot looks like it would barely squeeze into and be blocking the GPU fan (which is never stressed as I don't game, the onboard video doesn't have HDMI or DVI so I need to keep the Radeon). I think an internal card would look much cleaner than an external solution. I can add a PCI sound card with optical out for about $20 which would be cheap in case it doesn't work out. The whole point of this is to do it as cheap as possible and I realize I could maybe just sell the video card and obtain a cheaper one with a slimmer profile but I want to get some opinions on this first. Here's a picture.
Would it be stupid to even attempt to put a soundcard in there?
This is the old case.
