I am currently in the process of designing a Minecraft server for me and my friends and I needed to know if there is a form of linux that is streamlined for this application. If you want hard ware specs just ask and you shall receive.

Minecraft requires Java 1.5+ (but many plugins require 1.6+ or even 1.7). All major distributions have Java in their repositories, often both 1.6 and 1.7.

I recommend installing either CentOS 6.5 or Ubuntu 13.10

We are going to be running the server vanilla so advanced plugins are not going to be a problem I just want something that is small and stable.

The two primary Linux distributions that have the Enterprise kiss of love are RHEL and SuSe. I would recommend the following OpenSource distributions:

    (1) OpenSuse <- Strongly in line with what corporate IT uses and will have much support, fairly easy to manage (yast)
    (2) CentOS <- Same as above and used for many hosting solutions.
    (3) Ubuntu Server < one of my favorites for desktop but does not enjoy corporate support.

Good Luck

As to which Linux. since you are going just server and no desktop then any should work fine once you install sun's java7. Many, like Ubuntu, come with the open source java which works nearly all the time but sometimes a program comes along looking specifically for the sun version. You may also want to install webmin so you can administer the system remotely. also, use the newest versions as the kernal will support more hardward out of the box.
