Hi All!

So the other day I order a Coaxial Cable, an optical cable and Optical to Coaxial Adapter.

My Mobo uses a Optical S/PDIF out and my surround sound uses a Coaxial.

Here's a link to my motherboard: http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z77%20Extreme4/

Here's a link to my Surround sound system: http://www.amazon.com/Coby-DVD938-5-1-Channel-Theater-System/dp/B001PA94TC

And FINALLY here's the links to the parts I purchased from Monoprice to use to get real 5.1 surround sound

Any help is welcome! If anyone could help me figure out whether i have the right cables and adapter and how to setup my surround sound for things like when gaming or watching movies! thanks :)

Solution
Sorry but I do not think that you need the stuff from Monoprice -- your audio input is an RCA audio jack according to the specs listed:

Specifications

Audio input: RCA Stereo Audio
Audio output: RCA Stereo Audio; Coaxial Digital Audio

The connection that would work is a 3.5mm jack from your computer line out to the RCA jack audio input, which you could do with THIS ADAPTER and this CABLE.

Also realize that the optical port on the mboard can only output 5.1 audio for movies and media where it's already got the Dolby Digital or DTS format. Games usually don't output 5.1 audio in compressed formats. To get 5.1 audio from games, you'd need an add-in soundcard that supports Dolby Digital Live or DTS Connect.

Agreed, but his real issue is that his Coby system has no HDMI or Toslink optical input. He can really only input to the single RCA jack input -- it is the only one that system has. It will work okay, but not be optimal.

I was wondering on that. I tried getting some details on that Coby set, or some pictures of the back input jacks, and couldn't find much. I'm guessing when it says "5.1" the DVD player acts as the amp and the speaker wires connect straight to the player. If that's the case, I suppose it would be possible to hook the twisted pairs from each speaker to a 3.5mm adapter and plug each speaker into the appropriate jack on the mboard. Granted, that means the mboard has to be the amp, which won't be very loud.

I'd rather use this cable to connect the stereo hookup, since it's cable and adapter in one.

I looked at that cable but he only has one RCA jack audio input on the Coby, and I hate stuff laying around not connected. :)

Really? Only one RCA? Then that's false advertising if it's advertising a stereo connection. Is there any chance that's actually a digital coax input? I mean, I know Coby is pretty low-end, but that seams a little bad even for them.

I know it sounds crazy, but first I found a picture of it with ONE RCA jack input total and here are the specs from B&H Photo (which no longer sells it):

No. of Channels 5.1
Input 2 Analog Audio: - x1 (RCA)
FM Antenna: - x1
AM Loop Antenna: - x1
Headphone: - x1 (3.5mm)
Karaoke Mic: - x2 (1/4" Phone)
Output 2 Coaxial Digital Audio: - x1 (RCA)
Analog Audio: - x1 (RCA)
Composite Video: - x1 (RCA)
Component: - x1 Set (RCA)
Speakers: - x6 (Spring Clip)

It is 5.1 channel, but only for the devices that are already built into it, anything else, not so much.
