Hi,

I just purchased a gigabyte r9 280x for my PC. I connected it and powered up the computer, however I do not get any display at all. Any ideas why this is?

My PC Specs:
A-Power 860 Watt Gold PSU
i7-2600
Gigabyte GA-Z68m-D2H S1115
8GB 1600 Mhz RAM

Could it be a problem with motherboard compatibility or my PSU?
Note: I have two 8-pin plugs(6+2) which I assume are for the GPU, however they run off the same power cable. ie. the power cable runs into the back of one of the 8 pin plugs and also runs out from the first 8 pin plug into a second one.

(My current card is a Nvidia GT520 which I have put back in for now which still works)

Thanks.

It's the PSU, I reckon. Firstly, the brand A-Power is not so convincing. Secondly, I'm sure that it doesn't deliver any more than 600W worth of output if not less! Thirdly you said that the 8 pin cables are joined back to back. These 3rd grade PSUs usually have more than one +12V rail, and two back-to-back 8 pin cables mean that the PSU cannot feed your card enough(NOTE: TDP of that card is roughly 200W-250W at peak load). Get an Antec or Corsair 600W with at least an 80 PLUS BRONZE certificate and I am sure your problem will be solved. Almost 99% of GPU problems arise due to 3rd class PSUs and I think that is the case with you too..

Will have to wait and see how I go when I install it once the new PSU arrives. In the mean time I'm guessing I should probably update the motherboard bios as well before I install the new card.

As I am going fro an Nvidia card to an AMD card do I need to remove the current drivers before putting in the new card? Also should I install the new drivers before I remove the old card and install the new one?

Yes before removing your old card remove all your existing Graphics drivers and then put the 280X in the PCIe x16 lane and then install the latest beta drivers which is 13.11 from www.amd.com..

So my new PSU arrived, connected it all up, and still have the same problem. I removed the old drivers completely, then installed the new card, but still no display at all. I have no idea why it's not working :s

OMG!! That is very sad to hear. Ok try this out:

1. Uninstall the drivers and unmount the card from PCI e slot.

2. Connect the monitor to the motherboard VGA output.

3.Enter bios and find GPU settings. Select PCIE card as first one, and disable integrated, or set it to auto.

4. Now put your card in PCI e slot and connect the required Power cables(two 8pins I guess to the card from the new PSU)

5.Connect the card with the monitor. Check if display is coming..

Do these steps and then reply ASAP..

Thanks again for your help, managed to get it working finally. There was a problem with the monitor cable, got it working with the DVI cable.
