It's possible that a newer, 13.10, Ubuntu will work, or a copy of Mint. Download them and see if they work from the dvd. It's a question of the SiS driver which can be installed manually but I'd try a new mint or ubuntu first before those gymnastics.

Puppy, mint lxde, or lubuntu.

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS works best for me on all ex XP machines. The newer LTS (U13?) has never yet worked for me! I notice another response refers to Sis graphics - not very well supported especially the 65X/M650/740 chip - no video and constant crashes with this chip and linux (not just ubuntu)!
