My onboard sound card is 5.1 . What do I need to make it 7.1 ?

I built a computer for my nephews and the sound was just absolutely amazing after discovering his on board sound supports 7.1 and buying him a Dolby 7.1 surround sound head set .

After consulting my motherboard manual I discover mine only supports 2/5.1 channel .
So in order to get the 7.1 surround sound dolby do I only need a usb adapter such as the following

Im guessing yes but confirmation would be much appreciated ?

Depends a lot on the headphones you are using.
1. If you have USB headphones, the sound device is in the head phones and doesn't use the motherboard sound at all.
2. If the headphones have a single 3.5mm audio connection, I think they just expect a stereo output from the PC which is then converted in Dolby surround.
3. If the headphones have a number of 3.5mm audio connectors (front, surround, rear, centre/lfe), then these make use of the motherboard surround sound (or a sound card).

Really, the difference between 5.1 and 7.1 is probably not noticeable.
5.1 is front left and right, surround left and right, centre and lfe (sub woofer)
7.1 is front left and right, surround left and right, rear left and right, centre and lfe (sub woofer)
If you are using headphones in the 3rd category and you want 7.1 over 5.1, you get an add in sound card.
