I'm pretty sure my 2.5" laptop HDD is faulty as my laptop keeps randomly switching off and I tried using the HDD as an external portable HDD and my PC said an error code which meant it had bad sectors
is there anyway to fix it before I throw it away?

Solution
There are some programs that will mark those bad sectors and not use them anymore. The issue with that is once the drive is having issues can you really trust it anymore not to have more issues?

You don't really "fix" the bad sectors, rather you use various disk utilities to tell the HDD to not use those sectors. What make/model of HDD are you using? With that info, you can go to the manufacturer support website and get their diagnostics utilities to check the drive out and address many of these issues. The drive may even be eligible for an exchange depending on its age.

As mentioned -- you can have them marked asbad sectors and not be used anymore but with the price of HDD and the odds that once it begins losing sectors chances are more will show up soon - best bet is to get a new HDD and get whatever information you want to keep off of that old one before it completely breaks down. Once bad sectors start showing up the rest of the disk surface is questionable. Definitely don't trust it for any important information as it might become corrupted and unuseable at any point !
