HI Guys,

I have Asus GTX 780 DC2OC, Maximus hero VI and i 4770K. I installed windows 7 32 bit initially(by mistake) and installed the drivers from OEM discs. I was able to hear everything perfectly on my philips 1080p 47" TV.

After installing Windows 8.1 I was able to hear the audio when I installed the drivers from the OEM discs, but after I updates the drivers using online drivers I am unable to hear audio through TV. The device is shown in the sounds playback devices and it shows metering too.

I installed the bios drivers from Asus using AsusEZ update and also the latest Nvidia GPU drivers from their site. (331.82-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-english-whql)

I did hear a crackling sound when I tried to play Bioshock infinite.

I though the nvidia HD drivers might Since then I've doing a clean install of drivers with nothing but graphics card and physX drivers check marked. That didn't resolve the problem.

After that I did a clean install of nvidia drivers again with everything check marked for install. That didn't solve the problem,

After that I tried to manually uninstall the drivers(Nvidia HD drivers) from device manager and then windows took some default drivers (I forgot the name but they were some Microsoft drivers) but that didn't solve the problem either.

The audio device is shown in the Nvidia control panel, and windows sound panel. The Realtek device works fine if i try it using headphones.

Any help is greatly appreciated? Any one else has faced this issue?

What doest the crackling sound mean? Is it possible that my card is faulty?

Please help guys! Thanks in advance!

Solution
I don't know how or why, but when I went home yesterday, it started working again. I am sure I restarted and checked all solutions before too, it was a pleasant surprise : )

Well i thought of that same issue with my ASUS GTX 560. A video card is a video card and that's it. So your video card only sends video out not audio so i would suggest if your tv has it a 3.5mm to 3.5mm headphone jack from your speaker port on your motherboard the the headphone jack on your tv.

EDIT: didn't read whole post i see that you had audio through your card before updates but not after ill let someone else tackle this one.

Yeah, I can even see the metering bars move when I play some audio, and the name of my TV.

I've also gone to nvidia control panel and tried testing there, and in windows sound settings, there is no sound in the tv. It was there on windows 7 and it was there on windows 8.1 initially, but after I updated the driver there was some crackling sound I heard and poof, it was gone. Hate it..

I had this same problem and managed to solve it by experimenting with some things.

After a few hours scouring the web, the only solutions I found were to update my drivers, which was garbage.

This may be unique to me and my setup, but I selected my HDTV from the "Playback" menu with the "Sounds" control panel. From there, I went to the "Advanced" tab, and changed the "Default Format" from a setting that used 48000 Hz to a setting that used 44100 Hz (bit rate did not matter).

I am currently running Lenovo Y510p > HDMI to Sony Bravia HDTV --> Optical to Logitech Z-5500.

My guess is that the Logitech receiver system somehow did not play nice with the 48000 Hz frequency (I am not tech-savvy enough to give a real reason why).

This problem happens because of OS have conflict between two different HDMI ports such as onboard Intel HDMI port and another GPU HDMI port. This conflict leads to leak of sound signal that OS doesn't recognizes.

I have perfect tricky solution for this situation.
(1) First of all Remove your graphics card from your PC.
(2) After that Attach your home theater or TV's HDMI cable to your Intel (or on board) HDMI port. If you have Monitor that has DVI Port that attach it. If display doesn't come on boot.
(3) Star your Computer with Internet connection if you have.
(4) Your OS will automatically update driver as it suits. and You must have to uninstall all your NVIDIA Drivers entirely.
(5) Now Download latest driver for your on board graphics from its manufacturer's site and install it.
(6) Restart your Computer and DO NOT INSERT YOUR GRAPHICS CARD AT THIS MOMENT.
(7) Your sound may or may not come out of your TV. if not than just remove HDMI cable from back panel and re insert it even if your computer is ON.
(8). try to play or test your TV now it 100% playing sound.
*** BUT I KNOW YOU WANT AUDIO FROM YOUR GRAPHICS CARD, NOT FROM ON BOARD ****
SO
NOW,
(9) Shutdown your computer and insert your graphics card. and attach all your home theater or TV to it.
(10) Boot into BIOS. and if your BIOS has option to choose or enable disable graphics adapter than your graphics card will be primary and your on board should be choose "always enable".
(11) Save your BIOS settings and restart PC.
(12) As PC Restarts install graphics driver from windows update not from driver provided from CD or website.
(13) After installation completes. Restart your PC. disconnect your HDMI Cable and reconnect it force fully.
(
ITS DONE.
YOUR SOUND IS NOW ALL OK.!!!!

Sorry for digging up a previously dug up old thread, but I felt that considering the fact I just resolved this issue (after a couple others, all seemingly causing something else), I'd chip in what fixed mine.

I had issues with GPU 1 viewing the BIOS, but only being able to use GPU 2 to view windows. I managed to fix it so they were both using GPU 1, but it caused an issue with the sound. Automatically, I realised it was a driver issue (because this case almost always is), so I simply updated my driver to the latest one. This would also work for simply reinstalling the driver.

My suggestion is to always assume it's a driver issue first. That way, the worst that happens is that you've got a fresh driver, the best case scenario is that you've fixed your issue.
