I have 2 questions First I installed a AVERMEDIA Game Broadcaster HD card in my pc with ubuntu 13.1 and Win 7. Win 7 works fine but wont record from my cable box via hdmi. Its blocked why? and is there a way around this? my goal was to turn my computer into a full 1080p hd DVR as well as a gaming machine. My second quuestion. The card is not recognised by ubuntu Do you know if its supported? and if not which cards are?

In the system settings I think you can find "Additional Drivers". Have you gone there and checked if there are any available to install?

The drivers work fine the card funtions and the signal comes through clear as a bell but recording is restricted from my cable box but if I record from other sources it works fine. When I try to try to record from cable I get a message that recording is restricted. I have been researching this and I have found that it may be a form of encrytion set my my cable provider that prevents recording, not because recording tv is ileagal its fine but because they want to force me to rent thier dvr instead of building my own. I was hoping that someone might know a way aroung thier recording block. I use hdmi connector for my cable box to the capture card.

He means additional drivers in ubuntu to see if there are propietary drivers that can be automatically installed.

The only driver I've run across is this one http://www.kernellabs.com/blog/?page_id=3288 looks like you have to buy it, don't list the price.

"* Capturing video content with HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) is not supported." (from their website)

I have been told that a adapter might remove the encryption from the hdmi video. I have been looking for the correct adapter. My cable box has rca 3 out or hdmi out and the capture card is hdmi input only. Any suggestions? I thought if I could find a rca 3 to hdmi adapter I could get around the encpytion using an anolog video sorce namely the rca 3 out but I can not find the adapter any where. I need 3 rca 1-video 2-audio to hdmi male, any one know where I find one? Just in case anyones wondering recording TV is still ok as long as the comercials remain. I asked my cable provider about this and they said the reason they encypt the signal is to force people to rent thier DVRs rather then let you use one of your own and I could try to work around it if I wanted to but any work around would likely cost me some picture quality.
