I'm looking for a method by which i can attach 10..24..32..64... maybe some other unrealistically high amount of hard drives to one system. Really 32 would probably be the max, but im interested in just how many one machine could support.

Really i'm trying to make a kind of "monster" storage box.

What kind of tech does this usually involve? Ive been trying my google-fu but cant seem to find much regarding hard drive limitations or how to attach more drives than one mobo has sata ports.

Imagine building a custom PC with a desktop motherboard and trying to connect... 256tb of storage to it.

you will need a NAS enclosure for that purpose.....may i know what do you intend to do with that kind of storage capacity (just out of curiosity) ;)

Monsters don't like to be stored...silly Valkuma.

SAS storage controller with a drive rack(server rack module) would be about the only think I can think of. Usually such a system is something you buy from a storage vendor.

Those sound like separate products which are not what I'm really looking for, as I want full customization..essentially i am making my own SAN/NAS with my own software packages and just need a way to plug these drives into the physical unit.

Its a homebrew file/backup server.

there is no way you will be able to plug in so many drives into your main board......even with an extra pci-e sata controller

you have to use a SAN/NAS

How do you think SAN/NAS devices plug so many drives into one unit?

You can hook up 12 drives to this card.

Having a backplane just makes it easy. No need for dozens of cables, just one to the rack and back to the storage controller and power plug(or two) A lot of up front costs, but you'll like the features they come with over time. Hot swap, load/wear balancing, drive monitoring and reporting.

Just cramming a full tower/rack style case with drives and putting storage controllers in all the slots won't be very pretty.

Thank you Eximo and Navysealbrian for sticking on topic and answering the actual scenario question :)

Of course this is going to be a ZFS box, maybe going to put FreeNAS on top of it. The drives dont have to be pretty, they just have to be able to hook up to the PC and be recognizable by the OS.

This of course renders a premade NAS/SAN solution completely unusable and not even on-topic.

Thanks !
