I will admit that I am not the greatest BF3/4 player but I think I can help you out some.

If you are playing on PC, which I imagine you are, here are few things that will help keep multiplayer gameplay smooth.

>Use graphics settings that allow you 60ish FPS or greater.
>Try your hand at unparking cores for your CPU. Title like this can gain some benefit. Start>Control Panel>Power Settings>High Performance>Change Advanced Power Settings>Processor Power Management>Set Values to 100%.
>Kind of a no-brainer, but use a hardline internet connection...do not rely on Wifi connectivity (just an opinion but I like the reliability).

Actual Gameplay:

>Move around the map.....CONSTANTLY. You never want to stay in one spot for more than a few seconds, especially if you are in a full game with a moderate to small sized map.
>Perimeter movement. Maps in both BF3 and BF4 offer a variety of routes to take in order to reach your "destination". I would highly recommend sticking to the outskirts of moderate to small sized maps for starters.
>Learn the maps. Get to know the maps you are most often playing in. This can provide a tactical advantage as you get used to the gameplay.
>Run the Assualt kit often. This is especially important early on as it will allow you more flexibility with regards to different game modes. As you get more comfortable with online play, you can try experimenting with other classes. Jumping into the Recon Kit day one might not be a good idea.
>Stick with your squad. Well, mostly. If your squad is running around like a chicken with it's head cut off, then don't. But, if it looks like your squad is a competent bunch of folks, stick close with them as you may learn a few things regarding the map, the kind of equipment they are using, and how they strategically play together.
