Hi All,

I've had an Xonar DX soundcard for a while now but dont really understand all the settings in there.

I used to just plug in my surround system and didnt really have to worry about any settings but i'm living with family at the moment and frequently need to use headphones for gaming.

I want to set it up so i can hear footsteps and know what direction they are coming from. Currently i cant say i'm getting this so i must have something set wrong.

In my Asus DX control panel i have the following set:

Channels=2 (i only have 2 channels right (left+right)?)
Sample Rate=48KHz
Analog Out=Headphone
7.1 Virtual Speaker Shifter=Ticked (not entirely sure i need this option but it sounds better with it)
Dolby Headphone=Ticked (this option is supposed to work the virtual surround)

In my games lets take BF4 for example i have:

Speaker Type: Headphones
Speaker Configuration: Surround (not sure if i should set this to stereo?)

What am i missing ?

Do you have surround headphones? Some headphones I don't think can create surround sound (ie: footsteps sounding like they come from infront of behind) but only left or right. If you have surround sound headphones then you should be able to set them up for it. If they are surround headphones Try setting your channels to 5 or whatever the higher options are.

I dont have surround headphones just stereo left and right but supposedly you can get virtual surround through any headphones. The Xonar soundcard is supposed to be capable of doing this and at the time this was one of the main selling points for me as i had a feeling i would be using headphones.
