I'm currently planning a CPU and GPU(and motherboard) upgrade for my pc, atm I have an AMD Phenom 965, a GTS 450 and ASUS M4A78LT-M motherboard. I'm looking at buying the MSI R9 270 and I'm pretty set on that, but I'm not too sure on the CPU and I have no clue about the motherboard.

I've been looking at the i5 4670k and the FX 8350.

I would also need a motherboard, preferably all black or black/red. I have a budget of about £400, and I don't really want to go over £400 if I can help it. Also, for the motherboard, do I really need PCIe 3.0?

I've been looking around and for £403(from Scan) I can get an i5 4670k, R9 270 and a MSI B85-G43 GAMING motherboard

or

FX 8350 BE, R9 270 and Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 for £396.

Would it be worth getting a Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P motherboard for the 8350, getting the 790X and saving like £40? I'm really unsure as what to do. If you have any better ideas on a CPU, GPU and motherboard around my budget then please feel free to tell me.

I have a Corsair CX500 power supply and a CM Storm Scout 1 case. I am planning to upgrade my RAM but I'm waiting for the prices to go down.

Sorry for so many questions, I don't want to waste my money :p

That top option won't work very well no reason to get a 4670k and then get a board that you can OC on, need a Z87 chipset to OC an intel rig. With yoru budget get an 8320, the R9270, same board you have, and add a Evo 212 cpu cooler and OC the processor a bit. Will be cheaper and faster than anything you have listed there.

I don't think I can use the 8320 or the 8350 on my current motherboard, they're not on the supported CPU's on the Asus website anyway.

No you can't use an FX processor in your current board. When I said same board you have I meant the one you have listed for the AMD build. You can use the 8320 and OC it to get the same performance out of it that you would an 8350 and save a few bucks.

Oh I get you, my bad. The 8320 OC'd with an R9 270 would play the latest games on Medium-High at 1080p? Games like BF4, AC:BF and Watchdogs are the ones I'm mainly doing an upgrade for. Also I forgot to ask, my CX500w PSU would be able to handle this upgrade, right?

Thanks for your help btw :)

it's pretty close but it should be able to handle the build. I would suggest something bigger if you didn't own it already but it should be okay. and yes that build should be able to play pretty much anything but bf4 on max settings @ 1080P and really the only thing you'll have to turn down is some of the AA stuff.
