Hello,
I received really good tips on this site and so i decided to post my extremely frustrating problem in great detail in the hope that someone might have the answer.
For a year now i had an A10 5800k, an asrock fm2a75 pro4 motherboard, 8 GB dual-channel Kingston 1600 memory, seasonic 520w bronze PSU, OCZ 128 GB SSD, and 2TB seagate HDD. All went without any problem , but i wanted an upgrade so i decided to switch to an FX 6300 with an asrock 970 Pro3 R 2.0, and an ASUS GTX 660. So the new components were these 3, the rest being tested for a year, and worked fine.
I put together the PC, and to my surprise it ran on the windows that was already installed on the SSD, with a little problems at first until it installed the drivers for the new mobo, and i replaced the AMD drivers for the Nvidia ones. I tested in Prime 95 for 30 min => max temp on CPU 50 ( i have a CM 212 EVO). tested in some games on ULTRA... all went perfect. Turned off the PC.... second day i turn it on, it does not display anything on the monitor and i smell something burned. I try to close it by long pressing on the power button but it does not work. I use the manual switch on the PSU. Nothing is visibly burned. I strip the mobo and run only the mobo and PSU... no warnings(for lack of RAM and Video). So i burrow a PC from a friend and start testing. all my components(PSU, RAM, SSD, HDD, Video card) work perfect on the other PC. The components from the other PC trigger no change in the asrock 970 mobo(still dead- only spins the fans from CPU cooler and video card- no video output, no power to USBs). I send in service teh mobo and CPU(since i cannot test them separately. In the week that followed i used the video card and all my other components on my frinds mobo and CPU. All works fine. After a week i receive a new mobo(same model) and same CPU- since they tested and it was ok. i reassemble my pc -> turn it on-> no video, after 2 seconds i smell smoke and turn it off . Try again; same behaviour as last time - no video signal, not responsive. I put all my components back in my friend's PC, it starts but i forgot to plug in the sata cable. turn it off, plug it and when i try to turn it on, it will not. Try his PSU. Will not turn on. Change Video card, and it starts. Repeat => get same result. It will not start with the GTX660. The same PC that ran fine for a week and 1 hour before all of the last events will not start in the same configuration because of the video card.
At this point I have no ideea what is the problem : The video card, the new mobo, the new CPU, my PSU????. I do not know :( After smelling the mobo i am 70% sure the smell came from the component under the heatsink highlighted in the attached picture. Maybe it gives you a clue, cause i do not know what to think.
Sorry for the above novel, but i wanted to give all the details.
Thank you
