Registry Defrag Not Working

So I use System Mechanic by iolo, and besides a few hiccups (unable to scan my hard drives, causing sys mech to just close during hdd scan, not crash, just close, and it never finishes ssd optimization, gets stuck at 100%) it works for what I need it to do, general maintenance. Recently I believed I got a virus, one that played a random audio ad for crizal lenses, even when there were no ads anywhere, and so I did a round of sys mech and then some scanning. Part of the things I do with sys mech is to do a registry backup and defrag. It will say that it worked, and that it cleaned what it could, last time I did it it cleaned 9 out of 10 issues, the last one being unfixable, and it would say that defrag would be done on restart. So I restarted, and the black screen with the text saying "iolo systems inc. Registry defrag about to being." then a countdown, press esc to abort. I waited, and then it said please wait, and then it just didn't do the defrag and instead went on to the login screen. I don't know why. It does this every time i start my comp, and pressing esc to abort didn't stop it from happening subsequent times, nor did doing another registry defrag from sys mech. Does anyone know why?

Please don't get hung up on registry cleaning/defragging utilities. They are unneccesary at best, harmful at worst.
My advice is get rid of SM and spend less time worrying about Windows being absolutely squeaky clean other than
the usual housekeeping tasks.

For me that means regular backups, a quick blast with Ccleaner's cleaning module once every few days, and a data defrag when it rises above 6% fragmented.

Yeah, but System Mechanic does everything CCleaner does, and more. I just run the registry defrags when I do the rest of the normal cleaning (junk files, clutter, etc) since it takes approximately ten seconds to schedule, and about 30 seconds to run. I emailed iolo about it, and they told me to reboot into safe mode and try the process from there until it worked, but it still didn't work, and they haven't responded after I told them about that. I just uninstalled SM until they email about a working fix. (I believe the issue was caused by their new update, as this never happened before)
