So this morning I was online registering classes for next semester, and had a steam game downloading in background. Then comp screen goes blank. PC shut down. At first I thought the power in the area had gone out again (already did twice in past week). But, realized the T.V. was still on. No ozone smell, pops, crackles, sparks anything.

This happened over the summer as well. In that case I found it to be the PSU was shot, blown capacitor. Got a new one and everything ran like a charm, till today. This time it seems fine, nor are any blown on mobo. Though this time the led on mobo is gone. Telling me I have no power. My question is how common are power cord failures? Could that possibly be it as everything else seems fine, just at glance anyway. Also I have no spare parts to swap, or friends in the area yet which I can borrow from.

depends on the brand of the power supply. good ones like cosair and seasonic there made to last and there doa rate is low. other cheap power supplys from china can be labeled higher then there rated output and when used can pop and take your pc out. if the power supply is a name band unit most vendors can do a cross ship. if not i would rma unit and see if it was the power supply.

unless you have a volt meter or a power supply tester there no real way to tell if the whole unit or part of a power supply failed.

I would start trying with a new PSU. You can borrow one from the PC of a friend, just to check whether that is the cause. And yes, go Seasonic if you want quality, reliability, and low noise.
