Should I retire my i5 750?

I'm currently running:-
i5 750 @ 4.0
6970 @ Stock
2x2 gig of ripjaw 1333
Gigabyte p55-us3l

I'm [strike]want[/strike] need to upgrade, I've been considering my options of just getting either a 280x or a 290 and 8 gigs of ram, but would the i5 750 bottleneck the graphics card?

Also if so I've been looking at getting a new CPU and Mobo, my budget is only around £300 for those 2.

I was thinking getting the FX 8350 as it's affordable and seems to give a lot of bang per buck and the motherboards are cheap too but will I see a substantial difference from my i5 750? I've searched everywhere and can't find a comprehensive answer for my OC'd CPU only it at stock.

Thanks!

You aren't going to bottleneck your Gpu with that oc'ed cpu. You would get better performance, but I would wait till ddr4 becomes the next standard if you can.

Yes on upgrading your ram to 8gb's though. Even the upgrade to a 280x is debatable. The 290 would do well though, but again you should wait for a better cooled card before buying one.

I have a core i5 760 CPU running at stock and recently upgraded to a GTX770.
This gave me over 40 FPS in Far Cry 3 with all the settings turned up.
I then tried to run Skyrim with a lot of mods to improve the graphics and found it would crash repeatedly.
To fix this, I needed to upgrade to 8GB RAM and a 64-bit operating system (Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit).

If you keep your current CPU, upgrade the RAM as well as the graphics card.
If you don't have a 64-bit operating system, upgrade this because many new games released will stop supporting 32-bit operating systems.
Your current CPU is adequate.

If you decide to upgrade your CPU, the FX 8350 is more than twice the speed of your CPU at stock.

Passmark isn't an entirely relevant tool when determining how well a Cpu will perform. That I5 can actually perform better in games than the 8350, so it really depends. Rendering or encoding the 8350 blows it away though, but for gaming that i5 is still very relevant.

Check this out: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/697?vs=109 And this is only a stock i5 750.

Ok Swordkd, point well made! Looks like I'll stick with this for a while then.

Would it be worth buying watercooling for the cpu bearing in mind I'm using a freezer pro 7 at the moment? How far could I push it then?

What would you recommend ram wise? Could I stick another 2x2 ripjaw in or would that break my overclock?

When will DDR 4 become the standard? That will require me to buy another motherboard too though so if I were to do that I'd start from scratch.

I have a 64 bit windows, I probably should have mentioned that...

Thanks

DDR4 isn't really consumer technology at the moment.
Intel is talking about introducing it with the Skylake architecture when it is released (2015).
PCI-E 4.0 may be introduced at that time as well.
This will mean a completely new platform.

For the price, I'd just grab 2 x 4gb's of new Ram. I'm assuming you are using ddr3? The first ddr4 modules are being release in the next couple of months i believe, so it'll be fairly soon for it to be adopted by next gen. cpu's and motherboards.

:edit: Upgrading to a water cooled setup, either AiO system or custom loop, isn't a bad option either since you'll be able to use it for your next build as well. What I was reading was stating that 4ghz was about avg. for the i5 750, and any further required quite a bit more tinkering, so you'll need a better cooler as well. If it's in your budget, and your case will allow it, I'd go for it. The Corsair h80i is a good entry level unit, and the h100i or h110 are nice dual radiator AiO's. I prefer the XSPC Raystorm kits as a good entry into custom loop setup's, since they are an inclusive unit that allows you to "open the loop" and upgrade radiators/pumps/reservoirs.

I'm already at 4ghz on air and it's fine, I hardly ever hear the fan go. Would I get anything worthwhile like at least 4.5 on watercooling?

I'll wait for boxing day if you think there will be some deals going on... at least i'll try!

What RAM would you recommend?

Also I'm confused about the 280x's speed... it states: -
Core Clock Speed: 850MHz
- Boost Clock Speed: 1000MHz

what's boost clock speed?

Thanks again.
