Is my motherboard dead or my GPU dead? Also, my monitor is saying "no VGA signal" although I plugged in a DVI cable.

I built a PC, and when I'm trying to connect the DVI port into the GPU, the monitor ends up saying "no VGA signal" (it's what it exactly says, although I plugged in a DVI). The DVI cable worked fine on my other 5-year old computer, so I'm confused as to why this is happening to my new computer. I'm thinking that either the GPU or the motherboard is dead. The motherboard, however, functions well. The fans are moving, and the optical drive is working as well. The GPU worked fine yesterday, and I don't know why it's doing that.
Last but not least, I would really like the answer to why my monitor says "no VGA signal" when I plugged in a DVI cable. Thanks.

get a dvi to vga adapter..
gpu is not the only factor here...all components in your cpu system can cause no post
