PC Wont Boot With 2nd SATA Drive Attached.

My SATA HD stopped working recently, it is detected in the BIOS, but when I try to boot from it normally it gets to the starting Windows screen and does nothing, if I run Startup Repair, it sits at a black screen and does nothing.

So I thought I could install it as a second HD in another PC, boot the PC as normal from the working SATA drive in it, and, with the 'broken' SATA drive attached to SATA2, get access to the files on it that way.

But even with the boot order set to the working HD, the PC will not go past the starting Windows screen if the 'broken' SATA HD is connected to the PC, regardless of if its set to boot from it or not.

Any idea why I can't boot from a working SATA drive with the other drive connected as a secondary?

Thanks.
