so while playing planetside 2 my computer just shut off
when i tried to boot it up again it would start to try to turn on but would just putter out
after removing components and messing around with the computer (trying to start the computer too much), it will often load but may not start, and then want to do startup repair, or it will bring up blue screens with codes, and then restart. the computer restarts too fast for me to read everything. there is the light smell of what appears to be something burning.

some of the diagnostics say the cpu and memory is fine, but i am not totally sure.

the power supply voltage readings seem to be fine. i think it is the motherboard, and the video card may be shot

several months ago the computer froze several time and there was a strong smell of burning material ( i think it was silicon)

based off a hp m9350f

components
amd phenom 9850
m2n78-la viola
8 gb ram (4 original samsung, 4 corsair xms2)
amd 6850 xfx
asus dx xonar
corsiar gs 800
sus pci-e wireless card
some dvd drive
seagate 750 gb
an antec dbb 90mm as the cpu fan (a object fell into my case with the cover off and broke the original fan) fan speed on high

this is a fair amount my fault, but i would at least like to know what might be wrong.

by the way the computer was filled with a fair amount of dust

thanks

Solution
asus 970 r2.0 => if you just use single graphic card, and not have a plan to run your system in crossfire/sli..and this one just for slight overclocking..

asus 990fx pro r2.0 => if you want to run your system in multi graphic card configuration in crossfire/sli mode.
Nice overclocking capability..

if you only run in default speed or slightly overclock your processor, then asus 970 r2.0 is enough..
but if you want to overclock and try to reach maximum speed of your processor, then asus 990fx pro r2.0 is good answer..

so the cmos battery was removed, and then put back in. turn on the computer, and then ran startup repair. it finished, and loaded windows. ran bitdefender full scan. while i was in the next room the cpu fan started going nuts, when i got to the computer the screen was frozen. i turned off the computer right away.

"there is the light smell of what appears to be something burning"

whoa..
well, check your psu power cables to motherboard..all cables.
4 or 8 pin to mobo, and also 24 pin..unplug it..
and check, do you find something melt..?

sorry, i can't open that link..

somehow anand has block my ip..:??:

well, if you already done that, maybe it's time for a new and shiny motherboard..along with new processor too..
am3+ mobo not support any am2 processor..because your phenom memory controller only for ddr2 ..

the original post is the same

A couple things:
1. Have you let it run startup repair?
2. Has it run properly with the Antec fan?
3. Why do you think this is your fault?

1 yes, it can startup normally sometimes, but after a while it may go blue screen

2 as of all before, yes so i dont think it was it, the breaking of the previous cpu fan does not seem to have done anything since the computer naturally shut off right away due to no cpu fan working

3 just by not cleaning it as i should, does not mean i do not think it might be something else

one of the blue screens is 0x0000001e

when i would start the computer before the problem there would be a mom.exe error on startup and if i tried to use catalyst. the stardock update service and a game on desura will not work either. i think it might be .net framework, but am not sure.

also windows update did not work for the longest time, but after running some microsoft diagnostics downloads this seems to be fixed at least somewhat.

but it could not fix the mom.exe error, and it just seems very hard to figure what is the problem, and even harder to fix it.

since my computer ran, i just decided to try to fix it later.

it seems it might be a combination of both hardware and software

Wow that's old. Look at the pictures this post. Do you have any leaking or bulging capacitors on your motherboard?

as far as i can tell, no

been looking at am3+. already know a fiar amount about amd hardware. will the a10 7850 be faster than my phenom 9850 or should i go with a 8350
use would be gaming browsing and probably learning cad and design software for school (not heavy engineering work)

well, that an old motherboard..let's (he/her/or whatever you've called it :D) rest in peace..

a10 class is an APU processor, a processor with integrated graphic..
well, you already have HD6850 right..? there's no point to pick this APU processor then..

fx6300 + asus m5a97 r2 will be a nice combo..for all around computing activity.
it's much faster than your old phenom..

well, something like this maybe will fit on your needs..
CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor ($109.99 @ Newegg)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($29.98 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Asus M5A97 R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($92.99 @ NCIX US)
Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2133 Memory ($79.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $312.95

when i was open your link, it says..."You don't have permission to access "http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?" :D

well, discrete card is not disable any compute from APU..

But if you buy APU, that mean you pay for integrated graphic too..the processor it self is not too strong..
So $100 AM3+ non integrated graphic processor is way more powerfull than $100 APU..

and you already have a discrete graphic card..
hd 6850 far more powerfull than any integrated graphic from APU processor..

So, why you would pay for something that you'll never use..?

well, that's a nice combo..fx 8350 + GB Mobo + Patriot memory.

Btw..APU is intended for office computer and light gaming/3D application..the integrated graphic of APU processor is not to strong to handle today games..

6800k computing power is as fast Phenom II 965 BE..
but well, even fx 6300 much faster than 965be/6800K..

so is the 970 the best one to go with or is a 990fx much better for a 8350 considering the 2600 vs 2400 fsb and anything else.

what about 1866 with 9 or 10 timings vs that 1600 with 11 timings

would any of this make a major difference or should i just stick with that combo.
that combo is 300 by the way

do you think that hsa will be used heavily enough in the next 3 or 4 years that a apu might make sense

also do any of the software problems i posted above have anything to do with my problems

970 => if you only use single card..and moderate overclocking
990 => if you have a plan using multi graphic card

get the 1866mhz cl 9/10 or 2133mhz cl11. dont get any 1600mhz cl11. that's crap

apu is not making sense if you working with any 3d application or medium to heavy computing. it's just make sense if you working with spread sheet or just light gaming.

no..that's just a software..
your problem is hardware.

the 1866 would it be worth it spending 50 or so more dollars instead of the svaings from the combo

also what are some good motherboards for 970 or 990fx
msi, asus, gigabyte?
