Screen goes blank when playing games?

I have a problem with my graphics cards. At first I was using one Radeon HD 7850 and it worked perfectly fine. I could play games on high/ultra settings and my windows system rating for the graphics was 7.9.

Then I decided to get a second one and crossfire them both. It seemed to work OK and I enabled crossfire in the CCC and updated my drives (they are both the same card).

But now whenever I open up a game (any game at all e.g. crysis 3, BF4) the screen cuts out and goes blank. I can still hear the sounds going on in the background. I have one of those samsung monitors and when it can't detect a signal the blue light starts flashing on the power.

When I do a manual shutdown the screen comes back on. I can't even Alt+Tab or Ctrl+Alt+Del out of it, the screen just stays blank. It's only when I shut down my PC that the screen comes back. My Windows rating even went down to 7.6 for the graphics?

I don't know what has caused this? The drivers are updated and the power is connected to both card and both have the green lights on. The crossfire bridge is sitting in correctly.

Can anyone help please? See specs below:

- Asus P8Z77-V LX Mobo
- i5 3570k (not OC)
- 16GB DDR3 RAM
- 128GB SSD (OS boot)
- 1TB HDD
- 2 x Radeon HD 7850 (not OC)
- Corsair liquid cooler
- Corsair CX750 PSU

Hi rudlan, I've updated to 13.9 but I still have the crossfire issue. However it has fixed the issue of not displaying the crossfire option on my CCC. My software and BIOS are fully up to date and I have tested both cards individually in each PCIe slot. My only guess is that the crossfire bridge could be faulty but I only opened it out of its pack a few days ago?

Are u Sure....u installed both the GPUs in PCI-E Slot x16?

did u install the CF bridge properly?

The bridge is connected perfectly. As far as I'm aware the cards have been installed correctly. They are both the exact same card and the driver had been installed. I even took one card out and tested each slot with each card to make sure there was no fault and there wasn't :/

Are both cards running at the same speed settings? Try running with just the second card.

What is the update version of your motherboard BIOS?
Try to switch or turn your CF bridge (from north to south)
It also happened to my CF bridge when its not properly connected.

rudlan - You may have a point there. My mobo is a P8Z77-V LX and BIOS version is 2204. Is there a feature in my BIOS that I need to enable crossfire? And if so why does it only affect my games when I can still use my PC normally? Is crossfire enabled only when playing games?

huilun02 - I'm not sure if this makes a difference but my primary card in the first PCIe slot is being used for two monitors. The second card has no monitors attached to it, it is only connected via crossfire.

Yes that's normal. I wanted to see if the second card on its own is able to run fine in games. If it has problems, then naturally you still get it although it's the second card in the Crossfire.

So the issue now is that you can't enable crossfire in CCC right? Once u enabled crossfire it always enabled, even you dont play games.
Did you try the other CF bridge that came with your GPU?

rudlan - No that issue has been fixed. I can enable crossfire in my CCC because I updated to 13.9. The issue that remains is that when I do enable crossfire, if I load a game the screen goes blank, as if it's lost signal.

I've just had another look at the issue. I know for a fact that both cards and both ports are working. I tested the display in each card in each pcie slot on the mobo.

When both cards are sat in the mobo (without crossfire bridge) the top slot works but when the display is connected to the second card in the second slot the screen goes off. When I swap the cards around it happens again, which means both cards are functioning properly, which gave a hint that it might be the slot?

BUT - when I disconnect the power from the card in the top slot (or just remove it and only have a card in the second slot) the screen is working fine, which means so is the second slot.

So it must be a crossfire feature that needs enabling? I am going to do some research into my mobo to see if this is true. If anyone else has any ideas please share. Thanks

OK seriously it has to be some sort of setting? I've just tested it again with a brand new motherboard (exactly the same as my old one) and the screen still cuts out!! Both cards are brand new, mobo is brand new, everything is up to date including CCC, video drivers and BIOS. This is driving me crazy!!

Only the primary card has an output...

I've contacted AMD and they suggested trying to swap the display to the opposite card. When I took the side cover off my PC and enabled crossfire I noticed one of my cards kind of powered off, like the fans had stopped working? As I said the cards and mobo are brand new so this might be normal? A few things I will give a try after work:

- swapping the display to the second card.
- uninstalling all the video and AMD drivers, rebooting and running CCleaner, then installing the latest version again (as suggested by AMD earlier today...)

I will keep you posted on the outcome

EDIT* One other thing... do you need to enable crossfire on BIOS for the Asus P8Z77-V LX? I have enabled it in the CCC but is there a setting for my mobo that needs to be enabled?

Check your 2x PCI-E connector for your gpu ift it working and connected properly. All fans of 2 gpu must always running once you ON your PC.

If there is a setting for Crossfire in the BIOS then leave it enabled. And yes both cards should have their fans spinning no matter the problems they give you. No spin = no receiving power = board is dead.

I FOUND THE PROBLEM!!

After 2 painful weeks of trying to figure it out it turns out it was a dual screen issue! My second monitor is my TV (used when watching movies etc.) and connected to my primary graphics card via HDMI. I also have my main PC monitor connected to the same card via DVI. I'm not sure why but I can't use multiple monitors for gaming with crossfire enabled. I'm going to have a play around and see if it makes a difference connecting my TV to the second card instead.

Thank you everyone for helping :)
