Constant unresponsiveness, BSODs, and general tom-foolery

Hi all

So from the day i finished building my computer (some parts are second-hand), things have been acting up. It would go unresponsive for a short while every few minutes during general usage, but as soon as i was playing a game, it would run perfectly smooth.

Over a long period of time, some data on my primary, and my tertiary hard drives, seemed to get corrupted as well, resulting in me having to reinstall windows occasionally. It would also take an obscenely long time to boot.

However, over the past few months, things have been working perfectly until a few days ago, when i booted up to a black screen, with only the cursor on it. I tried to fix it to no avail and, so, decided to format my hard drive and reinstall windows (7).

Now things have really gotten out of hand. The setup takes ages to actually launch and each step is painfully slow and seemingly unresponsive. The actual "copying files" and "expanding files" goes relatively quickly, but everything else is the opposite.

It finished installing eventually, but as soon as it tries to boot to desktop, my computer suddenly shuts down or im greeted with one of a variety of BSODs. A different one each time i try to reinstall.

I can assure you that it isnt a hard drive issue or corrupted installation media. I have tested both in another PC.

Would really appreciate some help, thanks :)

RAM: Corsair Vengeance - 3 x 4gb, 1600MHz

Thank you, I'm on it now.

Is the Windows Memory Diagnostic test sufficient?

are the hard drives new? was this a new reformatted build or did you just swap the drive already formatted with different hardware? what happens if you only boot with the operating system drive? what happens if you run with 1 stick of ram installed? what parts are new/what parts are used?

Hi,

no, ive had them for a while. The newest would be the 1TB which i bought around a year ago, new.
The hardware hasnt changed at all in the last year or so, so no hard drives have been swapped.
Thats what im doing currently, i disconnected the other hard drives and now only have my OS drive installed.
I have tried 1 stick of RAM as well, no difference.
The GPU and RAM was new, Motherboard, CPU and PSU are used.

you have the latest windows updates?
all software that has auto updates has been disabled.... ( disable automatis software updates )
all motherboard drivers are up to date?
newest BIOS is installed( maybe it's not seeing the new HD .......... some machines have trouble with that ( old motherboard (bios) really big HD's )
did youn try a different ram stick?......... and in different slots?

have you tried resetting the cmos?

So I updated my BIOS and was very pleased to see some improvements. The steps in the Windows setup launch without delay now. Unfortunately, its still not working. The BSODs still come up and startup varies between being very slow and very fast.

I ran Memtest and no errors were found. And i cant really configure those updates as the OS is barely functional and eventually fails and gets corrupted.

I have been able to get to the desktop at least, things would run smoothly for a minute and then there would be an audible beep and soft "click" from my HD and my computer would freeze for a bit, then resume. Data eventually gets completely corrupted and a reinstall is required to get back to the desktop.

Theres no point in doing that, because i reformat it every time I reinstall windows

Tried that as well, didnt work unfortunately

does the board support the ram? ( was this a tri channel set ) is the voltage correct? did you try 1 stick only........ and move it from slot to slot and then try another?

how, many different raid controllers on the board? did you try each one?......... are you doing this testing with only the opsys drive hooked up?

does that hd have a 1.5gb jumper installed? if not, jump it.

yes it does and i have tried that, and yes i only have the OS drive connected

not sure what a jumper is, but i know the hard drive is fine and i have tested a different hard drive as well
