System will not boot--nothing appears on screen. I tried several fixes, I've included diagnostic card info in this thread.

This system started giving weird graphics problems one day. I'd turn it on then within 2 hours (usually much faster) it would look like Edward Scissor Hands had gotten a hold of my monitor and shredded it diagonally, unrecognizably. Then eventually, it wouldn't boot at all. The system would turn on, the fans would start humming, I'd gets some beeps and the power light would come on, and it would be red (later I was able to make it turn green again but it made no difference), but nothing would come on the screen. I tried different monitors, different power cables, different PSU's,. I've tried taking out and putting back in the RAM, to make sure it was securely in place. I've tried booting from different hard drives, booting from Live Linux DVDs (I should also mention that the only OS I use on this system is Linux). I also thoroughly dusted the system with canned air before trying all of these things.

If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it. I've been trying so long to fix this thing.

it has integrated graphics. can I fix it by buying a new (but very very cheap) graphics card?

So the computer will automatically detect that the integrated graphics isn't working and will shift to the new graphics card?

Please speak only for yourself. I haven't taken out my gpu yet as it is integrated.

EDIT: All I would like to know at this point is if the Computer would immediately identify that the integrated graphics is not working and if it would switch over to a new graphics card.

Thanks so much.

What does "discrete gpu" mean and how do I know if I have cmos?

Thanks so much for your help so far. Sorry I took so long to write back. I reset the cmos with the jumper per manual instructions and it worked for a short while then started having the diagonally "shredded" graphics again.

Do you think I can resurrect it with a new graphics card or new battery, or both?

Thanks again for your time.
