[SOLVED] i press k on my mac keyboard and a symbol instead

I turned my Mac on and started to enter my IDand password to get into the system. Whenever I press K i get an * but is is smaller and a bit higher than if I press the * key. If I press shift k, I get an apple symbol. All other keys are function. I just can't log in.

I figured it out. there are 2 option (function)keys...when I press one it does nothing which is correct. When I press the other I get the same circle symbol that I get when I press k. two keys are not functional. I plugged in a another keyboard and it works, so it is the defective/dirty key keyboard issue. I will try cleaning or replace. If you know any way acceptable to clean other that shake or compress air let me know.
