Hi,
There are several reason behind this. You need to check and eliminate those..
I can give you few thing to try on depends on the game that you play as in your post you haven't mentioned any name.
Some gaming server support punk buster specially games develop by ea..
Please check and install latest version from:-
http://www.punkbuster.com/

Another most important factor is that each server that you try to play once you connect should see you as valid gamer (means you own legitimate game)

Check the port forwarding in your Router setting some time that also cause issues.
Check these and it should help you..

The problem its that you install a program and the proxy settings changed

to fix it you need to reset the setting
to reset your proxy settings yourself, follow these steps:

On Windows XP, click Start, or on Windows Vista or Windows 7, click the windows buttom, and then click Run.
In the Run text box, copy (CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) or type the following:
reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v ProxyEnable /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
Click OK.
And again On Windows XP, click Start , or on Windows Vista or Windows 7, click the windows buttom, and then click Run.
In the Run text box, copy (CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) or type the following:
reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v ProxyServer /f
Click OK.
I had this problem today and i fixed it :D  hope its fix for u too
