Can my setup handle overclocking the CPU?

I just upgraded to a better psu and gpu but I feel I might be getting bottlenecked as I'm not able to play at fair/medium settings with a decent frame rate currently. If it is or isn't the case I'm hoping someone can clue me in on any potential problems that could be holding my rig back, unless this is what it's meant to be at.

Any help is much appreciated.

OK. That MB isn't designed for overclocking. It doesn't even have solid caps for the power transistors. And low phase power. You may be able to do some minor O/C'ing, but I doubt it would be enough to do much good. And all you would do is risk killing the board.

On heavily threaded games the processor will be able to keep up with the HD 7870 with its 6 cores, but on lightly threaded games the slow 2.8GHZ and low IPC of the old Phenom will cause some bottle neck. You might want to keep an eye out for a Phenom II X4 965-980 BE on ebay. Or consider saving for a new MB/CPU combo.
There is always some limiting factor, either cpu or gpu.
If your gpu upgrade was a big one, you may have switched from being gpu limited to cpu limited.

The X6 is not noted as a strong gaming cpu. Most games can use only 2 cores, so fewer, faster cores are better for most games.

If you can oc your cpu, try that and see how you do.

Or, to test out the importance of the cpu in your games,
Go to control panel/power options/change plan settings/change advanced power settings/processor power management/maximum processor state/
set to 50% and see how you do.
If your FPS drops significantly, it is an indicator that your cpu is the limiting factor, and a cpu upgrade is in order.

clutch has a point.
To test if many cores is of value in YOUR games, disable some cores in the bios and see what difference it makes.
If there is a big difference, then your games are coded well for multi threads.
If performance remains the same, reduce the number of cores until you do see a difference.
That will give you an idea of just how many cores will be needed for your games.

ASUS 7870 GHz edition. I'm barely seeing an increase on WoW so far, I'll try some others and see how they fair.

I'll try lowering the cores to see and I saw somewhere else that you can increase the FSB to 250 on the x6 1055t to bump it near 3.5 and it's relatively safe with a stock cooler? Only thing is.. I have no idea how to do that.

You might think that if a task was single threaded, and 100% cpu bound that you would see only one bar active and that at 100%. I have seen such a app show all 4 of my threads at 25% each, evenly distributed.
That is too bad because you can't really tell if you are cpu limited or not.

Oh, I didn't even catch that. My dxdiag and BIOS show it as 1055T.

Yeah, HWM shows it as a 1050T also. If it is the 1055T, it isn't a black edition so you can't take advantage of the unlocked multiplier. So you are talking FSB and voltage increases. What MB and PSU do you have? And you need to answer ihog's question.

ASRock N68-VS3 UCC and OCZ ZT 650W.

And in regards to hog it's a ASUS 7870 GHz Edition and I play games like WoW, Diablo, Skyrim and League of Legends.
