Simply put... I have an HP pavilion desktop that I password protected back in August of this year because hackers were taking over my other pc's thru my router. I put a password on this one and unplugged it from EVERYTHING in hopes that it hadn't been affected. Now I cannot for the life of me remember the password. I have been reading the forums but nothing is working. For whatever reason when I opt to go into safe mode with command prompt.... Neither safe mode or Command prompt will not come up. I don't have a reset disc for this PC. I also obviously don't have another pc right now to create a password reset disc either. I know on one of my laptops there were certain keys on my keyboard I could press and command prompt would come up. Can I do the same thing with this pc and I if so... What are the keys? I forgot them. : ( My son is in the marines and he has my laptop with him so no hope there... Plus he installed Ubuntu for the Os. I'm just lost here and I really need help. I own an electrical business and all of my data is on this one PC. I've been winging it until I felt it was safe to use a computer and router again. This is so violating and ridiculous but I need some normalcy to get past everything I've been thru and lost. I want to dive back into my work but I can't get past this password issue. Start up the computer and while Windows is loading, press and hold down the Power button until the machine shuts down.
Restart the machine and you should get an option to repair the computer.
Select to repair and as soon as the repair process begins, 'Cancel' it.
After you cancel the operation, you should end up at a screen of options which includes 'Open Command Prompt'.

You need to clarify if you mean a password on:-
1) the computer bios
2) a password on the hard disk
3) a passwork for Linux
4) a password for Windows
dealing with option 2) is beyond any amater and many professionals (and usually only found on laptops)
I am not allowed to tell you answer on how to bypass any of these passwords.
A local computer repair business or competent amater should be able to deal with 1), 3) or 4) on a desktop PC
Laptops are often more difficult but can be dealt with
I hope you have changed the router password and disabled remote access to the router
you can only make a Windows password reset disk on the PC the password is used on not another PC
Is your Desktop Windows and sons laptop Linux ?

I see four users, one of which is me. Nothing indicating administrator...I can see it's not going to let me in. Do you know if there are a set of keys on my keyboard which will put me into command prompt? I'm making every effort to do this without losing my data, but I can't even pull up a boot menu if I wanted to go that route. It looks like this computer was on its way down as well. I may have saved my data when I disabled it.... I'm hoping

However it looks like I also need a password to repair, recover, or enter command prompt as well, so I don't know. This particular computer had my business data on it. I have my clients backed up, but there are many programs I used with my company that are also on this computer. I have honestly looked at most of these programs recently on this tablet I'm using, and many of these programs have changed their interfaces to the point that I don't want to use their updated versions. I loved my contracts exactly as they are in the computer in question, and the newer version looks very generic. My advertising and revenue sources are also on this computer, and so on. I'm in a smaller town and people around here aren't into change. It depersonalizes them to many companies ways so to speak. So I see my company as my baby and my clients are like my family. Anything I can do to keep it that way... I will do. I have seen solutions in the form of password reset discs you can make from other computers with the same OS which is why I made that statement of not having another computer. You are correct. My son has Linux on the laptop he has, and I have windows 7 professional on my tower, or pc. And yes, we lost for routers throughout this nightmare. Several laptops and computer towers as well. I don't wish this on anyone.... And yes, I've been told this may have been done within a hundred yards of my home, or by someone with the password to my routers. I hate, hate, hate to consider that thought, but I know it's a big possibility and a horrible, violating, feeling. I'm trying to get past the fear of going thru this again, so I just want to pick up and move on where I left off, just this time with extreme caution and precautions. My routers password has definitely been changed prior to even hooking it up to my internet. Can't be too cautious

the only thing to bear in mind is if the sick PC has 32 bit (X86) version of Windows the System Repair disk must also be made on a 32bit (x86) version of Windows

Did you set the password in BIOS? If so, resetting CMOS should defeat the password.
