Is my GPU the problem here?

I recently bought a PC with the intention of using it for gaming. Everything seemed to be working fine...except that games would randomly crash. It happened more often with demanding games like Bioshock Infinite, but would also happen with some older games as well. After trying a lot of things to fix it, I decided it must have been the GPU (a Gainward GTX 760) and traded it in for a new one.

New card arrives, same brand, and an interesting new problem appears! Now the PC will randomly reset - most often while playing games, but occasionally when doing nothing at all. By 'reset' I mean that the screen goes black and the PC restarts with no warning. Sometimes the GPU fan will go crazy at the same time, but this doesn't always happen. Occasionally the monitor will go black and then never show anything at all, forcing me to reboot.

Here's the thing: this also happens in Linux, so I seriously doubt it's a driver issue. Did I just get really unlucky with two GPUs in a row, or is something else (I'm thinking PSU or motherboard) to blame? I tried using my brother's Zotac GTX 470 and had no issues at all, but I'm wondering if a PSU issue might only be triggered with a card that has a higher power requirement?
