Problems upgrading to Windows 8

when ever I boot my laptop with the USB installation I get this error

The computer started using the windows installation media. Remove the installation media and restart your computer so that Windows starts normally. Then, insert the installation media and restart the upgrade.

I would like to find a way to get this to work, cause I would like windows 8 on my laptop.

As USAFRet said, an upgrade has to be done from within the OS.

Booting from USB/DVD doesn't upgrade, it performs a clean install deleting everything else in the process.

Boot into Windows 7 then plug in you USB. If it doesn't run automatically then open your USB and double click the setup.exe file.
