how much of a performance difference is there when you overclock an i7 4770k with a hyper 212 evo and if not much is there a similar cheaper intel i7 product

Solution

Hey Luc-

The i7 4770k is the cheapest processor in the current i7 line up- unless you can get an Ivy Bridge i7 3770k. Based on your cooler, you should be able to get a 4.2ghz OC (maybe?), which is around a 5-20% difference in performance, it basically isn't noticeable, but it still is, and may help in rendering.

Out of curiosity- what editing suite do you plan to use and what GPU do you plan to get?

You can normally oc a 4770K from 35 to 40-43 with a cooler such as an evo. Some 15-20%. A very good deal, considering the minimal price premium for the "K". Past that, a $80 cooler will give you diminishing returns, perhaps another couple of multipliers

If you are looking for a gaming cpu, then the i5-4670K at some $100 cheaper will do the job equally well. The hyperthreads of the i7 will go largely unused in games.
