On Nov. 27th Don Woligroski here on Toms listed the R9-280X as the best card available for 300 bucks on newegg. Now...just before Christmas mind you....the cheapest one on newegg is 400 bucks. Too bad those are out of stock...now the cheapest is 419 dollars. Am I the only one that smells backsides burning in honor of old saint nick? Just my 2 cents :??:
BTW lets boycott Christmas.

Go get a GTX 770. It outperforms an R9 280X anyway and it's available for much cheaper and it's in stock:

Yes it is a rebadge, But probably 95% of the people buying it don't have a clue.
It is the newest ,latest and greatest in their mind because of the 290-290x reviews and marketing.

Just like Apple. You don't have to have the best product, just the best marketing team. Review sites created the mess.
Their new card is finally able to compete with a chip designed for the Nvidia 600 series but was not used because AMD had no competing card. So nvidia saved the premium chips from production and released them as 780 and 7680Ti models.
The lower end chips were sold as the Titan to offset production costs. Most went to professionals because they were a lot cheaper than Quadro and Tesla cards.

Toms gave the 290x the elite award, other sites did the same or similar. So now the NEW Radeon line is the best ever, even if all but the 290 line are rebadged cards.

To the OP buy the 7970 it is the same card with a different name.

Except gtx780/ti, titan, r9 290/x nearly all high end GPUs are rebadged/renamedrenamed with minimal changes
e.g. 680 -> 770, 660ti -> 760 or with amd hd7970 -> r9 280x and the rest of r9 line

So you can get a hd7970 too if its cheaper, at my place they are actually pricier than r9 280x :D
