I'm running a gtx690 with an i72600k factory overclocked at 4.1 GHz from Alienware. I do see a lot of other owners of this CPU running it at over 4.5 ghz . I currently see temps of about 58c-60c under load. Would I benefit from a bit more over clocking and what max temperatures are safe? The chip is factory liquid cooled. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hey Toolguns,

Those temps look pretty good- 75c being your max.

You could overclock a bit more- but It's only a 300mhz difference, and if I were you I wouldn't do it- as I doubt Alienware would warranty your overclock.

However, do you plan on upgrading your computers liquid cooling at any time? If so- than when you should overclock.

You can get a bit faster CPU with a an overclock to max of 4.5 Ghz i would not go more. You procesor max temparature is 72.6 C and if it goes above i would get a bit better cooler. For getting over 4.5 Ghz you shall go with a custom loop but that clock speed over 4.5 Ghz is not made for 24/7 Usage and sometimes it can short the component life. I hope i answered you question :) Have Fun

Hey Toolguns,

Could you install prime95 (use SmallFFT) and HWMonitor to test your CPU's max temps?

From there I'll recommend if you should overclock or not.

HWmonitor: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html
Prime95: http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft/

(As a rule of thumb, I tend to prefer to stick around 65c - 75c max, but hovering in the 80s are also OK)

Ran Prime 95 for about 8 minutes.
It shows Cores #0-3 hovering at about 66-71C
and the Package Temp reached as high as 74C

I hope I gave you the correct info you wanted.
Thanks.

Thanks for the feedback.
I just wonder if my current cpu clock speeds might be bottlenecking my GTX690.
All may games run great at Ultra except BF4, although I think BF4 is not optimized right now...
My case doesn't have the best airflow, so It's something to consider.

Thanks PCDave,
I'll stick with the stock overclock for now.
I still have a warranty going until July 2014 with Alienware.
Maybe a future liquid cooling uprade next year when the warranty is up...
What would work best for pushing my CPU even further and keeping it cool?

It would depend which case you have.

Could you perhaps take a picture of inside your computer case and post it?

Thanks,
Dave

It's an Alienware Aurora R3.
I'm thinking a few more years and I'm just going to do a new build, since this case doesn't have very good airflow and is smaller compared to some CoolerMaster cases I've been looking. I'm also interested in a better motherboard with more flexibility for upgrades.
