The CDROM for Windows 98 isn't bootable, you need a DOS boot disk which is a floppy to load the CDROM and then install from that.

Yes, it's that old. Once or twice we've actually needed to dust off Windows 98 at the repair shop which employs my esteemed self, for various specific reasons.

So do I need the cd rom disc and floppy disk or just the floppy disk

you need a floppy boot disk and a CDROM containing the installation files. Boot from the floppy first, then you can load the CD

And does it take a long time just to install this one floppy disk

Does the PC have a floppy drive? If it does booting a floppy disk is quick (it's only 1.44MB after all)

Also, what system is this? Finding device drivers (to make sound, networking, etc work) will be a PITA for an ancient version of Windows. If this is a very old system, you'd still need to find a product support site for it.

I dont think I would really have a problem with drivers because when I first got this pc it came with a drivers disc will all the drivers so I guess im good with that

I can't find the model listed at gateway's support site. If you go ahead with that, it looks like tracking down those drivers will be a major PITA

Alright, you have a disk. Hopefully those drivers are compatible with 98se. Well, you'll need a boot floppy to load the install CD, and you'll need a license key too.

Some one told me that they installed windows 98 se on floppy disk without the cd disc

Well it's possible you can use a whole load of floppys instead of a CD but one CD would be easier, LOL. You do need one floppy to boot the installer though. Like I said, the CD isn't actually bootable by itself (unlike modern install DVDs).

Well...it is a 15 year old, obsolete OS, long discontinued by the company that licenses it.

Define 'cheap copy'.

Can you get drivers for Win 2000? Windows 2000 is based on NT, not DOS like win 98se so drivers will NOT be compatible between them. There is Windows ME (though that was a buggy version of Windows with tons of stability problems)

For old games, maybe you should look into DOSBox.

Win98, W2000.....15 yrs old vs 13 yrs old. Both long discontinued. I still have a working Win2000 install. An old laptop, turned on maybe once or twice a year. Just to connect to the car and run diagnostics. When that finally dies, I'd not pay actual money to buy another Win2000 install to try to reproduce it. I'd move on with newer equipment.

Both are long obsolete. Any difference in pricing is not a 'problem'.

Personally, I wouldn't consider Quake 3 "classic gaming". Q3 runs just fine with WinXP. Probably better than with Win98SE.
And is available under Steam. As is Q1, Q2, and Q4. And various versions of Unreal.

I've been thinking of sporting out the $9.99 for Q1 on Steam (my all time favorite game), rather than going through the machinations of getting some old hardware running to install and run it.

Q3 is a classic even if its on steam but if you dont want to call it classic then I call it vintage gameing
But im getting off topic so should i get win98 se or win2000

For games, Win98 or XP. You can maybe make it work with Win2000, but that is primarily NT based and does not have the gaming subsystems needed.

Yes, Q3 is a classic game. That whole series is my favorite.
But for me...'classic' or 'vintage' gaming would be pre Quake 1 games. Commander Keen era and before.

And if I'm not mistaken, I got my original copy of Q1 running just fine on Windows 7 a year or so ago. I'll have to try it again, and also with Q3.
