I think I want to purchase a 4820k CPU. Originally I was looking at getting the GA-X79-UP4 but I've read there have been functionality problems with the bios. I've also read that some mobos just won't overclock with the 4820k because of bios issues as well. What mobos would be compatible/work well with the 4820k? My budget including the CPU is about 480 USD, and I know I can get the 4820k for 270 USD, so anything either in bundle or by itself for <~220

Solution
That's an open box/return something to that effect (wouldn't touch it) - look midway through the ad - in RED

"Cables, I/O shield and Driver discs are not included."

Another vote for a 4770K chip and an 1150 socket motherboard. This combination is affordable and *very* fast. Depending on the MB you select, overclocking is and easy possibility. With the savings obtained, you could go to a fast video card and end up with a cutting-edge system.

I already run a GTX 680 so I think I'm fine on GPu for a few years my weakest components by far are my CPU and mobo respectively at the moment. I have given a lot of thought to the 4770k as well and have seen that the at clock speeds that it does indeed surpass the 4820k in most benchmarks by ~.5% but the lack of soldering on the IHS is a big con to it in the area of overclocking ability and arises the problem of overheating. I made another thread on this topic earlier that kind of covers this. I plan to do mainly gaming and with this hopefully some overclocking. I'd prefer not to take any risks when I overclock and since the 4820k can run cooler and at higher overclocked speeds (4.9GHz max, 4.3-4.4GHz being the butter zone) than the 4770k I am leaning towards it in my choice. I still may switch my thoughts but I at least want to fully entertain the idea of the 4820k and look at motherboards for it before I completely decide.

this is a little off topic now since I posted this in the motherboard section, but I might as well ask: does anyone know of some benchmark testing the 4770k overclocked vs the 4820 overclocked? I have found many doing one overclocked versus the other normally as some sort of control, but it's still difficult to discern which would be able to outperform the other. This is why I don't think all those benchmarks with the 4770k vs 4820k as base speeds are unfair. The extreme series was MADE to overclock and I've seen some interesting results where the 4820k actually runs cooler with less wattage and voltage while overclocking to 4.0-4.3GHz. The base clock benchmarks are like putting it on a leash vs a mainstream Haswell CPU which although it can overclock, is made more for users who plan to use it as it comes right out of the box, and it is maximized for those results.

perhaps, but my problem right now is that I don't know which ones to look for. Most of the reviews on 2011 mobos are outdated to the original release of the socket and some might have conflicts with the new extreme ivy bridge-e tick.
