Okay so I have a WD Caviar Black 1TB. I've had it and the rest of my parts since august. Just today, it started making this really odd whining noise (or I could have just noticed it). It was somewhat quiet so I did a few things - turned of the computer, opened her up, tried to see if it was the fan by unplugging it, googled YouTube videos to see if the noise was normal, etc. About an hour later, I deem it normal and got it running again, starting up my Sims 3 game. While loading the game, the whine came back with a vengeance (I was playing the Sims 3 when I noticed it first too.) I paused and thought, maybe it's from loading the game? Well, then the noise kicked up a pitch, my heart sank, and I turned the PC off (Typing this from my macbook). I don't know what's wrong! It's not making those usual noises of a failing HDD - clicking, thumping, the works. So what is it? It sounded somewhat like a bad speaker whine, you know? Please answer soon. I'm afraid to turn the PC on.

Solution
It is normal for HDDs to make whining and whirring noises when operating use
CHKDSK on your hard disk drives to detect and try to fix any errors but i assure you that is often normal (7200 rpm hard disks to make those noises)

It's just that I've never heard it before, that's why it's terrifying me ._. Like they even change in pitch. It'll stop sometimes then come back. I just pressed my ear against the case and it sounded like it was coming from the back, near the PSU, GPU, and stuff. And as I'm typing this it sounds like a radiator or the sound of an automatic garage opening or maybe the heat coming on or the sound of a heater in general. I'm sorry my related sounds are so odd but these noises are scaring me. I've never heard anything like them before.

I once also had sounds like that, its normal for a hard disk to make such noises but if you must be sure check for bad sectors using
My Computer-->Right Click Each Local Disk --> Properties --> Tools --> Check Now, then make sure both boxes are ticked and click Start. If it asks for scheduling of a disk check during next boot do so
